ALMOST 30 days after the Gillard Government announced a backflip on health funding for Victorian Hospitals, local health services are still waiting for the cheques to arrive, says Liberal candidate for Ballarat, John Fitzgibbon.
Local health services have endured the impact of budget cuts for three months, with nearly another month passing since the promise of the funding return, but the money still hasn’t arrived.
“Labor’s parliamentary secretary for health needs to stop this cruel and unusual punishment of local health services, their staff and patients and make good on the commitment to return the money,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“We are fast approaching the end of the financial year and the Gillard Government must come good with the money or admit they never intended to keep their word.”
Ballarat Health Services is awaiting $2.86m, Djerriwarrh Health Services $386,000 and Hepburn Health Service $112,000 as promised to them on February 20, but Mr Fitzgibbon has a simple solution. “When parliament finishes sitting on Thursday the parliamentary secretary for health should bring the cheques back with her to ensure they don’t get lost in the mail,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“That way local health services can bank the money and use it to start repairing the damage caused some time next week.”
